On Friday this week the day that Year One children had been eagerly waiting for had finally arrived. It was our visit to Banham Zoo!
Linked to their learning in Science, the children experienced a day full of excitement and amazement at the wonder of the animal kingdom. Our class were able to visit many zoo animals during the morning and then take part in an education session in the afternoon.
The children were able to recall their learning about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores, matching animals to their prey and diets in the session 'What's for Dinner?' They could handle a model of a tiger's jaw, having marveled at the amazing real tiger watching us carefully from afar just moments before! They were also able to touch a giant stick insect, snail and cockroach if they wished. Many children were brave enough to try this unique learning experience.
The day provided many opportunities for new learning, too. Children could see first hand some animals they had never seen before and find out more about them as we read the signs around the enclosures. We saw many different types of big cats, encouraged out by the sunshine which we were lucky enough to have on the day.
A very special moment included arriving in time to see the monkeys being fed, making us laugh and also be in awe of their agility and care for their family. The meerkats lazing in the sunshine was also a firm favourite!
The children's behaviour was exemplary throughout and we were very proud of each and every member of our class.
