Week Commencing 5th October 2026
Another busy and exciting week has flown by in Year 5, with lots of excellent learning taking place across the curriculum.
We have continued reading our class novel, Skellig, and our discussions have become even more thoughtful and engaging. As we learn more about the mysterious character Skellig, we have been sharing our ideas about who, or even what, he might be. The children have enjoyed making predictions and, importantly, finding evidence from the text to support their thoughts and opinions. It has been wonderful to hear such mature discussions, with everyone using clues from the story to justify their ideas.
In English, we have been focusing on developing the emotive language we use within our writing. The children have worked incredibly hard to explore and describe Michael's feelings throughout our narrative work. Together, we discussed a range of powerful vocabulary and phrases which help create atmosphere and allow the reader to understand a character's emotions more deeply. Some of the excellent language we explored included intrigued, curious, fearful and silence hanging in the air. It has been fantastic to see these ambitious words and phrases being used independently within the children's writing.
In Maths, we have started our new topic on decimals. We have been learning how decimals are formed, how to read and write them correctly, and how each digit has a specific value. Using a variety of practical resources has helped us to visualise decimal numbers and gain a deeper understanding of tenths and hundredths. The children have shown great enthusiasm and have impressed us with their growing confidence in this new area of learning.
Our Science lessons have been particularly practical this week. Working in pairs, we carried out an investigation to discover what happened to our heart rate after completing two different activities. Before beginning the experiment, the children carefully considered the variables involved and discussed which variable they would change to ensure a fair test. They also planned how they would record their results accurately. It was interesting to compare our findings and explore how different types of exercise affect the heart.
On Friday, we attended our Harvest Festival at church. The children represented the school beautifully and filled the church with their wonderful singing. It was lovely to see so many parents, carers and family members in attendance, helping to make the occasion even more special. Thank you to everyone who joined us and supported this important community event.
We are incredibly proud of all the hard work, effort and enthusiasm shown this week. Well done, everyone, and we look forward to another fantastic week of learning ahead!
Week Commencing 28th September 2026
What a busy and amazing week we have had in class!
In English, we have been working hard on using present participles in our sentences. We explored how they can be used at the start of a sentence and also placed in the middle of a sentence to add extra detail and support the reader. We were very impressed with how confidently everyone used these in their writing!
In Maths, we focused on place value and worked hard to understand negative numbers. Mrs Broda-Kaye showed us a helpful trick using a number line, and it really supported our learning: "If it's tricky, draw a piccy!" This strategy has helped us to solve problems with much more confidence.
In PE, we took on the challenge of creating and performing a dance routine. We worked together brilliantly and definitely raised our heart rates! We showed excellent partner work and supported each other when we needed support to count the beats. Our PE learning linked perfectly with Science this week. We have been learning about the heart and how it pumps blood around our bodies. We discussed how our hearts beat faster when we exercise and were able to make links between our learning in both subjects.
Well done to everyone for another week of hard work, determination and enthusiasm. We are so proud of all you have achieved!
Week commencing 21st September 2026
What an absolutely wonderful start to the term we’ve had — it has been brilliant diving straight into exciting learning across every subject! It feels like we’ve barely stopped discovering new things since the very first day, and there is so much to celebrate already.
In reading, we have begun our amazing new class novel, Skellig, and we are already completely captivated by Michael’s story. We have thought deeply about how he feels about moving into his new home — a place that needs so much work, feels messy and unsettled, and seems to be changing all around him. We have also been spotting clever foreshadowing linked to wings, picking up on little clues and hints that suggest something extraordinary is waiting to be uncovered — we can’t wait to find out more!
Over in English, we have been stretching our grammar muscles and doing fantastic work with clauses and participles. We learned all about main clauses and subordinate clauses, practised identifying them in sentences, and then had a go at creating our own to make our writing clear, detailed, and beautifully structured. We also explored present participles and discovered how these special verb forms ending in -ing can bring our sentences to life and keep the action flowing smoothly.
In maths, we have been building strong foundations with numbers, focusing on place value to really understand what each digit means, and getting confident with rounding to make numbers easier to work with. We also ventured below zero to learn about negative numbers — seeing how they work in real situations like temperature, and how to order and compare them with skill and confidence.
Our art lessons took us on a journey through different styles and times, as we explored the elegant, detailed, and decorative world of Rococo art before comparing it to the bold, creative, and often surprising look of modern art. It was fascinating to spot the differences and talk about how art changes through history, and we shared some wonderful ideas about what we prefer and why!
In science, we turned our attention to one of the most amazing parts of the human body — the heart. We learned that it has four special chambers working together to keep us going, and we found out exactly how arteries carry blood away from the heart and veins bring it back again, keeping our bodies supplied with everything they need to stay active and healthy.
It truly has been a fantastic first few weeks — full of curiosity, hard work, and wonderful enthusiasm from every single one of us. We are already looking forward to all the new learning ahead, especially as the mystery in Skellig deepens with every chapter!
