Week Commencing 28th September 2026

What a fantastic week we have had in Year 6! The children have thrown themselves into their learning and should be very proud of everything they have achieved.

English

This week, we began exploring our main writing piece for the term, a narrative based on The 1000-Year-Old Boy. We will be writing about Aidan and Roxy finding Alfie after the fire, and the children have already shown great enthusiasm for the story and characters. We have been focusing on developing our sentence structure and thinking carefully about how different sentence types can improve our writing. We have also started exploring how speech can be used effectively to enhance a narrative and bring characters to life.

Maths

In Maths, we have completed our work on decimals, whilst also recapping important prior learning such as prime numbers and other key number facts. Next week, we begin long division and, whilst it may sound challenging, the children are excited and ready to tackle this important new skill!

History

Our World War One learning has continued with a focus on the Home Front. The children have learned about the vital role women played in keeping the country running whilst many men were away fighting for their country. We have had some thoughtful discussions about how society changed during this period and the significant contribution women made to the war effort.

Geography

In Geography, we have been investigating map projections and considering the challenges of representing a round globe on a flat piece of paper. The children were fascinated to discover how maps can distort the size and shape of countries depending on the projection used.

Science

Our Science lessons have focused on taxonomy and classification. We have explored how scientists use a universal system to organise and classify animals and plants, helping people around the world understand and study living things more effectively.

Art

In Art, we have been developing our observational drawing skills by focusing on drawing eyes. I have been absolutely blown away by the quality of the children's work. Their attention to detail, shading techniques and determination to improve have resulted in some truly impressive artwork.

As always, it has been a pleasure to see the children's hard work, enthusiasm and curiosity throughout the week. Have a wonderful weekend, and we look forward to another exciting week of learning ahead!

Week Commencing 21st September 2026

What a fantastic start to the year it has been for Year 6! The children have risen brilliantly to the challenge of their new responsibilities and have shown great enthusiasm for every aspect of their learning. It has been wonderful to see them embracing the opportunities and expectations that come with being the oldest pupils in the school.

In Reading, we have begun our exciting class novel, The 1,000-Year-Old Boy. We are already intrigued by the story and can't wait to delve deeper into the adventure to discover what happens next.

In English, we have been exploring the finer details of clauses, with a particular focus on embedded clauses. The children have been learning how to write effective embedded relative clauses and embedded subordinate clauses to add detail and sophistication to their writing. We have also been developing our understanding of speech, ensuring that dialogue enhances our writing by revealing emotions or driving the plot forward through changes in events.

In Maths, we have been consolidating and building upon our place value learning from last year. We have been rounding increasingly large numbers and challenging ourselves by exploring negative numbers in greater depth. The children have demonstrated excellent reasoning skills and a growing confidence when tackling these concepts.

Our afternoons have been packed with exciting learning across the wider curriculum. In History, we have begun our study of World War One, discovering the causes and impact of this significant period in history. In Science, we have been learning about the classification of organisms and how scientists group living things. Geography lessons have seen us exploring more about our globe and understanding how our world works. Meanwhile, in Art, we have been investigating the Italian Renaissance and discovering how this remarkable period transformed art and influenced future generations of artists.

We are incredibly proud of the positive attitude, determination and enthusiasm Year 6 have shown so far. We look forward to another term of exciting learning and memorable experiences together!
