This week has been packed with creativity, curiosity and some brilliant discussions across all our subjects.
✍️ English – Villains, Tension and Powerful Imagery
We planned the second half of our portal stories, focusing on how to build tension and develop a gripping plot. The highlight was designing our villains, making them as brutal, cruel and sinister as possible. The children’s similes have improved hugely, helping them create vivid, atmospheric descriptions that really bring their stories to life.
➗ Maths – Understanding Percentages
In maths, we explored percentages, learning that percent means “out of 100”. We practised converting between fractions, decimals and percentages, spotting links between them and explaining our thinking clearly. Confidence is growing quickly as the children recognise familiar patterns.
🌍 Geography – Australian Biomes
Our geography lessons took us across Australia as we learnt about its four major biomes:
- desert
- rainforest
- temperate forest
- grassland/savannah
We also investigated why Australia experiences so many bushfires and why certain areas are at high risk of flooding, linking this to climate, vegetation and landscape.
📜 History – The Long Fight for Abolition
In history, we were shocked to discover just how long it took for slavery to be abolished and the many powerful voices who fought tirelessly for freedom. The class showed real maturity when discussing the injustice and the courage of those who campaigned for change.
🔬 Science – Parachutes and Air Resistance
Science took us back outside as we built parachutes of different sizes and tested how their surface area affected their speed. There was lots of excitement as we predicted, tested and compared results, deepening our understanding of air resistance.
🎨 Art – Working with Watercolour
In art, we began learning how to use watercolour, experimenting with blending, layering and brush control. The children showed great patience and creativity as they explored this new medium.
